I think there is some confusion here about the term "travellers". As your first answerer said, "travellers" are nomads. They choose a way of life which involves travelling from place to place.
Genuine Travellers would not behave like squatters, since travellers live on the land, often in their own caravans, tents or trailers.
"Squatters" are different in that they seek out empty buildings and live there. But again, most squatters do not harm and would not rob or steal. They occupy buildings which are not in use, and which most of us would find inhabitable.
The word "Pikey" is slang to discribe the minority of disreputable people who do try to rip people off, and live by stealing. These people might call themselves travellers if it suits them, but they are not, in the traditional sense, and this minority affects the public perception of all travelling people, which is a pity.
Before the term "Travellers" became popular, we used the word "Gypsy" to describe people who lived in this way. Again, the genuine Romany Gypsy, like today's Travellers, are good people, with a strong moral code, who would not rob or steal, but who choose to live outside society.
But there are always a minority in every culture who act in ways which cause alarm, fear and contempt. (For example, think about what is happening currently with Muslim people) Or people who act in dishonorable ways and get associated with a particular group of people.
As humans, we find any difference difficult to accept. We often cope with the fear this generates by being judgemental.
A court order is needed to move people on, because people have rights. These rights apply to everyone, not just to some.
I agree that sometimes political correctness seems way over the top, and I'm not advocating this, but I do think it's important not to judge whole groups of people by the actions of a few.
Hope this is of help.

You need to be aware of the different laws that are being taken out so that travelers and gypsies cannot live off the land like they used to. This is the reason you get settled travelers. It is not abnormal. Just because they stay in one place it does NOT mean that they will be involved in criminal activity. That's like saying black people are the only ones responsible for gun crime or that women are the only sex that should cook. People need to get out of this outmoded thinking. People are people and this is just a basic awareness we should have as human beings. Some are not very pleasant and some are salt of the earth. If we continue to go down the path of thinking that there are races or sections of society under others, because of our upbringing or the fact that we are just unpleasant people ourselves then what is the point? You cant cull an entire culture because you don't understand it, We have been doing this for centuries and it has in no way shape or form, helped us as a human race.

The Tories delivered in rules to end casual traveling some years in the past in a knee jerk reaction to the "New Age" travellind scum. that's now rather lots unlawful to in one day everywhere interior the united kingdom, different than caravan web content. Many visitors do nevertheless attempt to trip to the classic gala's while they'd. They see the term "tourist" as a cultural description in recent times, nevertheless choose to stay jointly in communities with others of the comparable way of existence nevertheless, the place they'd.

I don't think all travellers are thieves, but if they were forced to live in houses, would you really want them living next door to you?It would probably take them a couple of generations to lose their untidy ways. But having said that, there a lot of settled people who are worse than them.I wouldn't care who lived next door,as long as they were good neighbours.I think there is too much prejudice in the world.

There are many names for these colourful folk. Here in the West of England, 'Thieving Gyppo bastards' seems popular!
I personally don't approve of such name-calling, naturally, but they don't seem to do themselves any favours when it comes to relations with the local communities, do they?
