Last week I vacationed in Tennessee with my parents. We didn't do much hiking or anything but we did climb up a thing called Clingman's Dome...it's 1/2 mile and like a straight incline, you go up 330 feet while climbing it...Anyway, afterwards my left leg was sort of sore, which I expected. But yesterday I was folding clothes and took a step back and stepped into a door knob on a very tender area of my back (lower back where the "holes" are) it hurt VERY bad and since then my whole left leg has been so tender, like all of the skin is rubbed off. It hurts to sit on a bed or chair or in a car, to have pants on, it hurts all the way down to my heel of my foot, so that it hurts to walk as well. Does anyone know what could have caused this or if there might be anyhing wrong?? I don't want it to be some serious thing and me wait till my leg is paralyzed........Thanks.

Sounds like it could be a couple different things.

The most common would be a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be caused by simply over stressing your back, like when climbing as you did. Most commonly, as described, you would have a slipped disc so to speak, where one or more of the discs in your spine bulge out of position a little it. They do not actually "slip". Here is a brief description.

Symptoms of nerve root pressure

Paralysis of single muscles, possibly with pain radiating to the arms or legs. There may also be a disturbance of feeling in the limbs.

Symptoms of pressure on the spinal cord

Disturbance of feeling, muscle spasms or paralysis in the part of the body below the spinal cord pressure. For example, pressure on the spinal cord in the chest area will cause spasms in the legs but not in the arms.

Pressure on the spinal cord may cause problems with control of the bladder.

Symptoms of pressure on the cauda equina*

The symptoms can include loss of control of the bladder function, disturbance of feeling in the rectum and the inside of the thighs and paralysis of both legs. These are serious symptoms and anyone developing them should contact a doctor immediately. (They are so-called 'red flag' symptoms.)

*The cauda equina is a structure within the lower end of the spinal column, that consists of nerve roots and rootlets from above.

Also, have someone look you over for insect bites. This could be caused by a severe spider bite. The Black Widow lives in warm regions in the United States, Tennessee being on of the states it lives in. Some of the most common symptoms of a BW Bite are:

Weakness, tremors or paralysis, especially in the legs.
Cramping pain in the stomach, chest, shoulders, or back, or all.

Either way, you need to see a doctor ASAP. As you said, you don’t want to wait until there’s nothing they can do for you.

GO to the doctor......

If there is no bruising, swelling, or hot areas on your leg...just the tenderness all over, you may have sciatica rather than a leg problem, caused by bruising your lower back when you stepped back. It can account for the pain down into your leg.

Try ice compresses to your lower back (20 minutes on 20 minutes off). If it is still bothering you tomorrow, go to a heating pad (20 minutes on 20 minutes off). If it is still bothering you the next day, it is time to get it evaluated.

If your leg DOES have any of the above symptoms, the problem is probably in the leg. It could be any number of things, all of which need to be evaluated by a doctor. In that case, ignore the above advice and call him today.

It's very important that you told us you vacationed in Tennessee, this will help. Clingman's Dome was actually the nickname of a bald teacher I had in high school who always came out of the bathroom with toilet paper coming out of his pants. If you are truly worried that your leg is paralyzed, then you should go to Yahoo Answers, because you will get a dependable diagnosis. My guess is this- you walked into a doorknob backwards, which is illegal in 3 states if you are under the age of 18. It could be the doorknob.

Sounds as though you pinched a nerve in one of your disc/disks in your back- I don't know much about it but I'm sure you will get many responses.
