Usually the PC freezes due to an application. Based on that, I can give the following answers in the order as I would try.

1. Try to shut down the malfunctioning application
Fist of all you have to try shutting down the application by clicking in the close button of the application window. Usually 20 ms is given for all applications top shut down once the close command is given. If it did not shut down, the “End Task” dialog box will appear and then press the “End Task” button.

2. Task Manager
Sometimes the applications may not shut down due to various reasons. In that case press “Ctrl” + “Alt” + “Del” keys to access the “Task Manager”. Then try to shut down the application by selecting it and pressing “End Task” button. Sometimes, this may not help. In that case, click on the processes list and try to shut down the relevant process for that application. It works most of the time. Task manager may appear even if it seems that the entire computer is freezed.

3. Manual restart
If none of the above is working, you have to restart the application by pressing the “restart” button in the computer casing.

try cntrl, alt, delete, and bring up task manager. See what's tying up the resources and close down those programs. If that fails, I try and reboot. Worst case scenario is I pull the power and restart the computer.
