I think you mean significant digits....

Significant digits are those digits in numbers who has a meaning/importance to the value of the number.
e.g.
253
2,5 and 3 are all significant digits
3400
3,4 are the only significant digits.
0.0351
3,5 and 1 are all significant digits
205
All are significant digits
0.00300
The last 3 digits are all significant

RULES:
All non-zero digits are significant.
Zeroes between 2 significant digits are significant.
Zeroes both to the right of a decimal point AND to the right of at least 1 significant digit are significant.
Bars above zeroes indicate that they are significant.
All other zeroes not written in those ways are considered non-significant.

i believe you are talking about significant figures in a number

significant figures is a method of estimating a number.

you count the first significant figure as the first non-zero digit, and continue from then on.

for example, 5569 estimated to 3 significant figures is 5570
0.032512 estimated to 4 significant figures is 0.03251
