This is just a further example that this whole political correctness rubbish has gone miles too far. Children have minds, and arent going ot go smoke a cigarette because a cartoon character they saw when they were 7 years old tried to impress a lady by smoking. Get a grip! I'm very anti smoking but this is just ridiculous!!!! This isnt anti cigarettes, its just some fool with too much time on their hands smothering their child. Protecting htem from the evils of the world? Christ, you'd best protect them from religion, other people, and the world in general!

I like Tom & Jerry. I never paid attention to the smoking and I haven't picked up a single cigerrette from it.

I do think smoking is gross and that most smokers are selfish, but I don't think its from a cat that chased a mouse and sometimes got along.

That is right up there with taking God out of everything because it offends only 10% of the population.

Shame on these people and may the fleas of a thousand camels share your bed!!

I agree. In that they should ban The Simpsons, the two sisters always have a *** in their mouth. I bet £10k they wont as the programme brings so much revenue to the UK tv industry, whereas Tom & Jerry dont appear as much now, you see the odd one on a sunday. Also ban Eastenders, Dot Cotton smokes, the list is endless. It just proves what s**theads the brits are becoming with this PC crap. (Im a brit b4 people kick off) We are constantly scared of upsetting anyone now. I say ban political correctness and ban complaining unless its a serious issue.

This is not the first time classic cartoons have been edited. Years ago they started taking out offensive racial humor from cartoons made in the 40's. And yes, kids will emulate what they see on TV. If they see a character light up then come across mommy or daddy's cigarettes on the coffee table they might try and do the same thing.

who cares?

a business. . . made a business decision. . . maybe i might be more upset if the govt had forced them to reevaluate their position, but the cartoon companies in question did so on their own.

if anything, its actually encouraging to see that they listen to each viewer's concerns. now, did i become a smoker due to smoking references on Tom & Jerry? no. i watched tom & jerry and i don't smoke at all. never have. but just like the rest of you have noted, it apparently made no difference on our decision to smoke (or not smoke), so why does it matter when they delete those scenes?

besides, the majority of their audience is between the ages of 4 and 14. do you really think they're going to notice that the smoking has been taken out? will 4 to 14 yr olds really care? at all?

How long will it be before the films of previous generations are edited for the benefit of the politically correct police?

Utter nonsense.

I used to love watching Tom and Jerry as a child and I have not grown into a cat-abusing chain-smoker.

If someone can be influenced into smoking by watching a cartoon cat, I would say that it is unlikely that anyone could deter them from taking up such a habit.

P.S. To the person who said that cigarettes are fifteen times more addictive than heroin: could you please care to provide evidence for this claim?

I am somewhat puzzled by this assertion considering that I have not seen a spate of robberys perpretrated by poor nicotine addicts craving for their next fix!

Yeah, I know, they can still hack at each other with axes, deadly traps, smash one another with pianos, plates, and other assorted household items...

...but to light up! Oh perish the thought!

Whatever happened to parent accountability and responsibility for their children? It used to be that parents were the ones responsible for raising their children and teaching them what was right and wrong to do to yourself and others. Nowadays, it seems like it's everyone else's fault if your kid ends up in a bad way.

Woman who let her 14 year old son stay at home and continue his heroin habit? Boo hoo...

...kick his a*s out unless he shapes up or gets help! How the hell did it descend to drug addiction in the first place? Surely it could have been nipped in the bud ages before that with a little effort from the parent. But no, it was the government's fault for lack of proper drug education at schools. They can handle it now.

My kid's fat and won't stop eating crisps and biscuits, no matter what I do?

...Who wears the pants in the house?? Who is responsible for stocking the home with junk and who cooks the meals?? Stop buying the bikkies and start making some decent wholesome food for your children (and I don't mean dinosaur shaped reconstituted chicken nuggets) and kick them outside to play on a nice day. But no, it's the media's fault because they market sweets and candies, often specifically at children. Let's ban advertisement of junkfood during children's programming! It must be their fault.

Parents, it takes a small amount of effort to raise your children in a moral and wholesome household. Even our family's managing, and we're not the most wholesome people to begin with. I find it repugnant that yet again, because one parent (or even worse, several parents) will complain about something they find offensive on the TV, that now it's banned. I'm sorry folks, if you have such a problem with your children seeing a disconcerting situation in a bloody fictional cartoon show, turn off the damn TV. Problem solved, saving you 30p on the stamp to send your complaint letter.

Is that pathetic or what, you would possibly want to imagine that each and each one the violence between Tom and Jerry might want to were more desirable of an issue to the computer brigade than the ciggies, nevertheless i think with a million in 4 children residing in a house with violence at the moment and by no skill something been carried out about it, it sort of feels the computer brigade imagine it truly is effective, for goodness sake its a damn caricature cat and mouse, its no longer authentic and by no skill did everybody i comprehend any damage through observing it, wager its computer to belt your children yet now to not allow them see a cig.

If that person really believes that their children will take up smoking from seeing Tom lighting up, then they must be happy to let that child grow up thinking that it's OK to commit terrible acts of violence on a cat as well!!! It's a cartoon, not real life!!!

This country was founded on the tobacco industry and now because a bunch of people sit around and can't think of anything better to do than hassle smokers and make the world child proof. How about not letting your kids watch that show or not taking your kids into a bar. For shits sake!!!!
