exact distance is 'as the crow flies' a straight line from point A to point B. what they do is to measure at a height from top of one city . then measure the distance from other city from that height thru ifra red rays.
a= heigth
b= distance from other city
c= distance between two cities
then "c" is calculated with sine, cos and tan.
