exact distance is 'as the crow flies' a straight line from point A to point B. what they do is to measure at a height from top of one city . then measure the distance from other city from that height thru ifra red rays.
a= heigth
b= distance from other city
c= distance between two cities
then "c" is calculated with sine, cos and tan.

In Australia it is measured from the GPO - General Post Office of one town or city to another via the main arterial road or highway.

Generally all over world, distance between cities are measured as distance from one city's GPO to another city's GPO.
