how do you kill the bogeyman?

I am working on a screenplay about how to kill the bogeyman when he appears to an adult ( a sort of shadow from their past due to trauma) and want to know if he can be killed or banished.

According to my "Fantasy Encyclopedia" By Judy Allen a Bogeyman is a malicious goblin, covered in black hair, who can be dangerous but is more often just spiteful. Fortunately these critters are not very intelligent and can ofen be outwitted.

Now horseshoes and 4-leaf clovers are often used as tokens of luck, but, orginally these were used to ward off the "little people" as which goblins are classed under.

But to kill...
Many stories suggest that to kill a Bogeyman or Boggart you have to trap them in our relm of existence until daylight. Being creatures of the night, they can not survive in the sunlight, They will either turn to stone or be cunsumed by fire until there is nothing left but ashes.
(could be good annalogy for bringing to light a childhood fear/nightmare)
But, be careful. If he turns to ashes, you must take the ashes and scatter them in a fairy pund where he can be morned by his fellas. Otherwise his brothers will continue to return again and again, night after night, reeking havok, causing cahos, and, basicly, seeking revenge for the fallen breathren. As long as their brother is returned to the fairy pong, they will consider the matter done with and, oh well, go on with life.
Apparently they don't care much one way or the other for a stoned brethren.

Oh, and, a side bar, do not approach a fairy pond without the ashes of a goblin. It will be the only time the White Lady will not approach you. If male, she will try to seduce him into a dance. If he refuses her, she will set her owls and cats upon him. For women, it will be the owls and cats from the get go, for she sees other females, no matter the species, as competition. But she will, respectfully, stay clear if you're returning the ashes of one of her "children."

Anyway, that's what I know, from one writer to another.

Nah. Just fight it face on. Since the bogeyman represents the adult's trauma, he/she has to first recognize this, and then find a way to reject whatever wounds that the trauma had inflicted on him/her so badly that the hurt and fear has actually become a physical manifestation. In other words, the adult has to understand the cause for this "bogeyman", and believe him/herself to be strong enough to fight/reject it, both physically and mentally. Thus the bogeyman can certainly be killed or banished when the trauma has been resolved.

Terry Pratchett the comic fantasy writer reckons The Bogeyman can be killed by putting the blanket over it's head.
If it's a serious play though, I would have the Bogeyman become pleasant and friendly when he is confronted.
If you want him gone, best to take him by the hand, lead him to the cupboard door and wish him a kindly farewell.
At least that's how I would do it - but writing's a personal thing.

Stepping into the realms of Drop Dead Fred (if you haven't seen it then go rent it, its good and we all love Rick Mayell) But bogeymen can be killed by adults by simply not believing in them (Think Peter Pan and fairies and that). Thats what in those types of story seperates us from children. Adults have lost the power to have such vivid imagination as children. Kids believ, kids see, kids conjure them up. Adults, cynical, non-believing, doubtful. Adults think they believe, they see the bogeyman, as soon as they wake to the realisation its not real *poof* vanish into thin air!

But.... As for liking fantasy a whole lot better I would suggest that the bogeyman and one adult that can see him have a valiant fight. Lots of superhuman strength. Fight Clubesque, surrounding people observing a person fighting himself and flying through the air, but in actual fact is fighting the bogeyman. I mean, how evil is the bogeyman??? Important question, I prefer him to be cold, heartless and absolutely ruthless. But then, you could lure him into a trap wher he is ambushed by all the children as they are the only ones capable of destroying him. The adult could instigate it and the kids could finish the job. Have the kids be as brutal as you like, afterall the bogeyman can only truly die when all the kids no longer dream (Nightmare on Elmstreet) or between you and me, he has had all of his bones broken, flattened beyond belief and buried in a jewelry box hidden in the forest where everything around that area dies. Ahahahahahaha, the curse of the bogeyman.... He just can't be destroyed.... he lives in every childs imagination. Kill the children, kill the children!!!! Or perhaps not

In Terry Pratchett's novels, the Bogeyman ceases to exist if you put a blanket over your head. If you put a blanket over the Bogeyman's head, he questions his own existence.

There are always "dark entities" around us -- but they cannot be killed. They are here to stay because Earth is a negative planet. But they can be ignored and asked to stay away. So to your question -- maybe banished from the adults mind.

Boogeymen were thought to be a type of Goblin. In fact, the German conjugate of proto-celtic based languages boggle-mann literally means Goblin.

As such, goblins have many weaknesses. Iron being the main one, especially cold iron or iron that hasn t been though the smelting process. Religious items were also used to ward them away or weaken them. Goblins, like many fairies in many instances are also thought not be able to cross moving water (such as streams or rivers). But probably the best bet as most boogeymen are said to be shapeless? Fire. Bonfires especially were used in All Hallows Eve type ceremonies to drive away evil spirits. Some had special herbs thrown in for good measure. But usually a fire in of itself was enough to drive back many evil spirits

Shadows disappear in the light...so bring "light" (facing past fears, realising that the past is gone and has no more power *unless you allow it* to control you). Our memories control us only when they continue to be present to us....the ability to move on and live in the real "now" moment is what frees us from the past. Laughter is another thing monsters, bogeymen (and abusers) can't stand--they live on creating a response of fear.
