Hello. most lighters today are disposable and use a reletively inexpensive fuel called butane. Now , in the event that you weren't told..." I'm no scientist " , but I'll try and explain this as I think it is and" ask the planet "can correct me if I'm wrong. Butane....a gas that , when exposed to air , has a chemical reaction that causes it to freeze and rapidly thaw , creating a liquid fuel. butanes half brother... or ...maybe it's a cousin , is propane which cooks hamburgers on the barbque grill. A few old timers still carry their trusty zippo. wind proof and they seem to make the people that carry one , a little " cooler " than everybody else. This type of lighter uses a liquid fuel. I'm still no scientist and so I can't tell you what it's called. The best discription ( I suppose ), would be to say that this fuel wont run an automobile but would start the other kind of barbque. You know , with the little square black things called " briquettes". I have absolutely no idea how they got that name unless they are a French invention. Anyway , if you are considering a zippo , here is the most important rule ...DO NOT OVERFILL ! Any guy that has ever carried a zippo will confirm this painful mistake. If you overfill your zippo and stick in in your pocket as you head out for a night on the town....you won't do much dancing. You see , the tiny amount of fuel that leaks out of the lighter ends up ...under the lighter ...which is sitting on your leg as you drive to the club. It begins to irritate the skin but is unnoticable at this point. Once you arrive and stand...the lighters position will change as if falls deeper into your pocket. The only noticable problem at this point is a slight itch...which you scratch. By the hours end , you are heading for the restroom to see if perhaps an insect bight has caused you to continually tug at the pocket area of your jeans and repeditively scratch your leg. You figure that since the girls seem to be avoiding you ...?... the restroom may solve this mystery itch. The moment you see the red square on your upper theigh , you realize that the lighter fluid has caused you to act stranger than usual. For the next 24 hours that raw square will make you swear that you'll never overfill again...which you will. But everytime you pull out that Zippo...the ' coolness ' returns and you remember why you carry a Zippo.[ no , they didn't pay me to say that but I have seen that red square many...mant times.]

Butane is the answer. The person who wrote an essay lost track of the question.
