A heat pad works best it loosens up the muscles. An Ice pack will tighten up your muscles.

Heat pad only because it works with your body muscles at its own heat temperature. Cold slows the blood flow down in the muscle causing your soreness to swell up.

Ice packs reduce swelling, heat is for cramps. Because heat increases blood flow to that area.

it's a matter of personal preference on this one...
ice is a vaso-dilato which means it will open up the blood vessels in your body, increases bloodflow to the muscles, which will help reduce pain and swelling.
heat helps improve superficial blood circulation, which makes the muscles more flexible, allowing you to work out the cramps easier...
so whatever you find more comfortable use....
you can also take ibuprofen-it has an anti-inflammatory in it to help reduce swelling. take 200-400mg every 6 hours but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours

ice reduces swelling and heat relaxes and loosens muscles. For soreness and cramps I'd say heat.

drink more water and stretch more and you wont cramp up so much!
the best way to do it is heat it up then cool it down keep the heat on it for 20 mins then put some ice on it for 20 mins and it should help.

1st 36 hrs, use ice to keep swelling down and relieve pain. After that, use heat to speed up healing UNLESS the heat causes swelling. Good luck
