Does anyone else have a problem swallowing food and drink and find it increasingly worse when people are around.. If so, what have you done about it and what is the outcome? I have just made an appointment with my doctor regarding this problem, but I've heard of others with it. What on earth could be causing it?

I had the same problem about ten years ago and it was due to an anxiety disorder. I felt like I had to think about swallowing. It was really strange. I got to the point that I would only eat soft foods. I did go to an ear, nose and throat doctor and he couldn't find anything wrong. I would go to the doctor and make sure it is nothing medical and ask him about it possibly being anxiety.

Need more info!! I have a problem with swallowing and what happens is after I swallow liquids it comes back up into my esophagus. Then it mixes with air and I have a hard time trying to relieve the pressure. Sometimes it feels like you have a lump in the back of your throat. Its been going on with me for a long time and I thought that it was part of growing old. After seeing a Mouth/nose/throat Doctor, he stuck this little camera down my nose and through the epiglottis to see the condition of all the working parts down there. After he examined everything he showed me what was going on and it seems that there is a flap of tissue at the back of the throat and this tissue was badly swollen and it was capturing and holding the liquids so I can't swallow correctly and then another problem with a valve at the end of the esophagus that open to allow food and liquids to pass through wasn't working correctly. He (the doctor) put me on Prilosec OTC for 4 months. It has helped somewhat, but it hasn't curred me yet and I have been on this for 2 months so far. Well, I hope this helps you, good luck

My youngest has a problem in that certain foods bring on a gag reflex. It is worse when you worry, so choose foods that are easy to swallow, like soup, prawn salad, ice cream. Its all about confidence -v- fear of embarrassment....so eat out with good friends who you chill with. Perhaps some situation is choking you - Ive felt grief that made a lump come into my throat so that I couldnt swallow. Do you have unresolved griefs/worries? your Doctor will help, but good luck!

My friend had that. there was nothing physically wrong with her. She has surgery on her nasal cavity, her tonsils romoved, and yet it only go worse. It was all mental, a consciousness about food and food in public and a subconscious phobia of getting fat. It got so bad she was hospitalised.

I would have said a glandular problem but as it is worse around other people, it may be sort of a panic attack.
As people have already said, some kind of anxiety thing.
Good luck with seeing your doctor, I hope you have one that listens to you. :-)

Could be a symptom of anxiety.
Make sure you chew your food well and don't stuff your mouth too full. Take your time.
An awful lot of people eat like they are at a trough.
