You go girl!...try a stereotypical lisp and whisper then mix this at will with over-exaggerated facial gestures and lashings of inuendo and you'll be able to make a total camp @ss of yourself, get your own TV show and no-one will ever guess you're 100% straight.

There are NO gay speach characteristics. Forget what you see on TV, the movies, cartoons and rumors. Speech characterstics do not indicate sexual orientation.
I know a man who is very flamboiant in his speech and mannerisms. He is a happily married heterosexual with children.
I know a man who has a rough, tough and low, "Darth Vader" voice. He is gay.

Most of it is stereotypical. Feminine voice on a male, fabulous (drawn out), hun, girlfriend. Its not so much the speech characteristics, than what is normally said.

What are some speech characteristics of a bigot or a homophobe?
I bet you would see how discriminatory and hateful this question is if we inserted other things for "gay" in your sentence, like "asian," "african-american," "canadian," "Republican," "Democrat," "Libertarian," etc. Please be mindful of this.

I actually talk pretty normal, except for my accent, and I find it offensive that people actually would assume I talk a certain way because I'm gay.

Puh-leeze! Just talk to the hand... Ooh she's having a tantrum - the sibilant lisssp and any number of other stereotypical phrases and supposed affectations (all in a high - pitched and overloud voice, of course).
I hope you found my answer (as contemptuous and sarcastic as it is) FABulous, Hunni! LOL!

anything anyone says is a "characteristic" is nothing but stereotype. you can't "tell" everyone who's gay by how they talk...

I agree.
On the other hand, one of my gay friends has a lisp. I think it's the cutest thing ever.

at what point do gay men decide to talk with a lisp and try to have perfect pronounciation, pitch and tone?
It's a stereotype, but I have met many. They didn't have a lisp in school!

in English?
the hissing 's' at the end of words, the prolonged vowels, the high- pitched voice, but those are just stereotypes
