Mazdas are way sexier cars. My fiance is 6'2 and drives a Rx8. They are beautiful cars, and are 4 doors.

Well I know that I have driven both. An 03 Civic Ex Coupe(1.7L) and I own an 06 Mazda 3i - touring (2.0L).
I would say that if you are a plain dude that wants to be like everyone else in the world and get a little better gas mileage, then go with the civic.
Now if you want to impress people with what a car should do for under 20k then go with the Mazda 3. I've owned it since Feb and I don't think I'll be buying another car for a long, long time. I used edmunds.com to compare before I bought and the 3 beat the civic in every aspect that had to do with the car moving. Trip to SD from MN, MPG about 34-36. I think I've made my point. Zoom-Zoom happy driving.

God I love idiots. You ask a question and these idiots ignore the question and rattle on about their agenda, go figure.
Now, to answer your question. The Mazda, definately.
1. both cars are superb. As per Consumer Reports, they rate 1(Honda) and 2 (Madza 3) but by just a hair.
2. August issue of Consumer Reports tested 5 door hatchbacks. Mazda 3, Audi 3. Saab 2.7, and 2 Dodge Chargers. Mazda won hands down. It topped their list of about 20 vehicles.
3. I bought a Mazda 3s 5 door in April and have plenty of head room (with a sun roof) and I'm 6'5". It handles better than any car I've owned (this includes vettes, and audi's) has much more power than the Honda. NOW this is the "s" model. It has the 2.3 versus the 2.0 and has a 5 speed "tiptronic" tranny. 5 speed auto AND 5 speed manual. The only problem: I would love to see paddle shifters on the steering wheel, but you can't have everything for $20,000. I live on a rollercoaster( out in the country, windy, twisty, hilly 2 lane road) I get 27.5 mpg. The "s" comes with 17" 50 series tires and handles like it's on rails.
This is, by far, the most car I've ever gotten for the money.
NOW!!!!! Something to consider!!
2007 Mazda will come out with a 5 door Mazda Speed3.
I don't know about reliability though. The Mazda 6 has not been as reliabile as the 3. (speed 6 is the same engine but turbo'ed for 274 HP.) It will come out with 250HP and 6 speed manual. based at around 22,800 ( or about $4,500 more than the regular 3 5 door OH it will be a 5 door) If you want to check it out it's at the Mazda site(that's where this info came from) mileage will be 20/28 versus 25/31 for the 2.3 5 door (160HP)
I'm sure you know, but the Mazda 3 uses a Volvo S40 chassis- not Ford chassis. The Mazda 3 isCOMPLETELY made in Janan(maybe that's why it has such a good reliability rating by Consumer Reports.
OH and better warranty. Have fun

As a Honda owner - I agree with the others in that the engines are not only powerful and efficient - you can drive them hard and they go forever and the fuel economy hardly differs.
The civic shape is so much classier than the Mazda and the resale value will be better too...

I've been inside both... and i can tell you that the Mazda is way more comfortable not only in the front leg space but also in the back, contrary to the Civic where if you put back your seat nobody can safely ride in the back without hitting their knees badly if you brake.

As a civic owner, I can tell you that this car is definately NOT quick. It is however really great on gas :) Unless you get the Si model which is like $21k, don't be expecting anything quick ok!
