The average rate of heartbeat is 72 beats per minute. Thus each complete cardiac cycle takes 0:8 seconds. This is divided into systole and diastole as follows: -
Atria systole: 0:1 seconds
Atria diastole: 0:7 seconds
Ventricle systole: 0:3 seconds
Ventricle diastole: 0:5 seconds
Complete systole: 0:4 seconds
Complete diastole: 0:4 seconds
When heart rate increases, the period of complete diastole is shortened. This occurs during activity, inspiration and response to some drugs e.g. caffeine. Heart rate decreases during sleep, expiration and some drugs e.g. alcohol.

At rest it beats 72 times per minute. But on physical exercise the beat per minute goes up.Depending upon how vigorous the exercise is and what is the age of the person, the rate may go up to 80% of the normal. The beat returns to normal after one has taken rest.

The heart's job is to move blood.
Day and night, the muscles of your heart contract and relax to pump blood throughout your body. When blood returns to the heart, it follows a complicated pathway. If you were in the bloodstream, you would follow the steps below one by one
Oxygen-poor blood (shown in blue) flows from the body into the right atrium.
Blood flows through the right atrium into the right ventricle
The right ventricle pumps the blood to the lungs, where the blood releases waste gases and picks up oxygen.
The newly oxygen-rich blood (shown in red) returns to the heart and enters the left atrium.
Blood flows through the left atrium into the left ventricle.
The left ventricle pumps the oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body
Heart beats about 72 times per minute, 100,000 times in one day and about 35 million times in a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times

it depends upon what is the person (assuming it is a human heart) doing, and what is his/her age. generally 70-80 beats per minute is normal for a human adult in resting position, but it can vary from 50 - 160 depending upon physical activity, age , sex , environment (temperature, level of oxygen in the air, etc.)
As a general rule older the person slower is the heart, (larger the animal slower is the heart)

I have been surfing online more than three hours today searching for answer to the same question, but I haven't found a more interesting discussion like this. It's pretty worth enough for me.
