Look with a magnifying glass: when you see scratches, you can be sure it is glass.
When you see no scratch at all, try to cut it with a knife. When it is impossible, it is a diamond.

There are many tests of hardness like scratching hardened glass or scratching another diamond. However, the most reliable test is to take the diamond to a Jewish pawn shop and see if the owners eyes light up.

All compounds have a specific refractive index, a signature if you will. You measure the refraction of light as it is passed through an object and measure the amount of bend the light makes, which tells you what the thing is made of.

The scientific way is to do a refraction test, and this is what ppl who test gemstones do.

THe easier way is to write on the hotelroom mirror with it. If it writes without crumbling, chances are, it is a diamond.
