Check Project Gutenberg on the web under the author's name. If it's there, it's a free download. The project has files of novels and short stories. B.

you probably can't. it's too recent and as such is covered by copyright law, i.e. it is not in the public domain. and i agree, the short story is scarier than the book and while the tone is the same, the setting and characters are very different.
