When you "save" it is saved as the current named file in the existing location but when you use "save as" you have the opportunity to change both the name and the location you will save it to.

When you save your current file in use will be saved in the same name and file.

When you use the "save as" you can save the same file with a different name in the same or different folder/location.

Let's say if you are using a file in Excel with a name book1. after opening the same file and you have made changes - just save and the same Book1 will be saved with the new changes.

Let's use the same Book1 , make changes to the file and then use "save as". It will immediately ask the name to save as. But incase you do not change the existing name it will tell you that an exisitng file with the same "Book1" exists do you want to replace - Yes or No.

I think you should try and maybe you will understand it faster.

save - it only saves the existing file with changes.

save as - it can save that file with a new name and in a different location as well.

save command saves to documents with the new changes ( if there ar any ) as it is. But by using save as option you can
1. save the file in same format. OR
2. with diferent format OR
3. You can save the file as a new file in different location.

Do the experiment yourself! Open a word document, save it. Then try the save as. Now, tell me the difference as far as the options you received.

save is when you have a file on the project that your working on save as is where you can ( say your editing a pic and you don't want to lose the original you can save as and rename a new file and you wont lose the other file) save as is where you can save the same file but under another name due to changes you might have made to it
