Islam Does not promote bellydancing. It is not good to be entertained by music according to islam and also a female should NEVER dance in a public place ( it might be ok for husband only)
Belly dancing is common in the middle east but there are many christians there who do this, and some muslims too but it's like saying that some christians are strippers - religious people won't do it.

Bellydance (or more specifically, Middle Eastern Dance) came WAY before Islam. It is part of Middle Eastern/North African CULTURE. Islam is a RELIGION.
For the most part, bellydance is not allowed under Islam but this varies, depending on the country and particular Islam sect. For most, bellydancing with a bare midriff is a no-no. Some are allowed to dance but only with other persons of the same sex. Many are not allowed to but still go and enjoy it. Especially if they are traveling outside their country of origin.
It's hard to cover all the bases in a few lines and I'm too sleepy, but you can read more about this on the web. There are a few serious bellydance magazines online.

Like all the other people said it is not apart of Islam because the women can only show there eyes in public, it is kind of a discrimation for women to do that.
My B-Dance teacher said that it started as a way to incourage women when the were given birth(movment of the stomach caused by the baby). Than it was used to worship the goddess isis.Than the men got the idea for it to be sexual. B-Dance came to america in the late 1800's eairly 1900's.The men and women here thought it was nasty. Around the 50's 60's it started to become popular in the use of exerise, enteriment, ex....
B-Dance is for any type of women.

Living in Egypt I see belly dancing is a big part of the culture here. But culture and relgion are two seperate things. A women is not supposed to do this infront of a any man but her husband.
And who said Islam does not include any sort of entertainment. This is not true. We just don't indulge in sinful entertainment, such partying, drinking, casual sex things like that

No, the belly dance is of Turkish origin. It isn't a religious dance at all. Mere ly a traditional dance which in the old days used to entertain men of authority, like kings.

Bellydancing is an Arabic tradition that existed before the birth of Islam; it is part of the Arabic culture not Islam
Islam does not allow women to dance in this form infront of men whom she should be covered infront of
Women can bellydance infront of other women or their dad, brother, uncle etc.. but without erotic movements

As far as i know it is not pat of Islam. Indeed Islam disapproves these kinds of acts. As far as i observed (and researched) it is part of the turist attractions in many eastern hemisphere countries, it is not part of daily life for a regular people. It is also an accessory for the Hollywood movies on the east.
