people who are young have no need to lie-- unless they want to look older for some reason. like my friend who wanted to date an older woman who wouldnt go out with him because he looks young-- (simply because he IS young). so he upped his age a bit to get her attention.

older people who lie about their age are afraid of SOCIETAL REJECTION as we stereotyped beautiful people to be young-- and therefore desirable. older people want to remain desirable (who doesn't?) and are sometimes forced to lie about their age.

its not even a matter of being liars. or insecurity. it's all a matter of wanting to remain young despite the age, as there are more opportunities for younger people in most anything in life, than for older people.

love life is one sensitive area. especially if someone is in love with another who is way younger. job is another area. some companies put age limits on the employees that they want to hire.

bottomline is, it's all a mater of what age limits us to do-- that we still wish we could do because in all probability, we still can, despite the age.

its what society-- and culture-- has taught us about aging, that makes being honest with age a little harder than it should be. the things that we EQUATE with old age are all discouraging: less people wanting to date you, less companies wanting to hire you, wrinkles, cellulites, diminished sexual drive, sagging body parts-- learning all these, who would want to be called OLD? so we run away from it, we hide from it, we deny it-- and rest in our comfort zone of lies for as long as we could, till we no longer can dye our hair or stretch our skin.

and yes, i count my birthdays backwards. lmao!

how old are you, 1st of all? i am 33, and i have absolutely NO problem w/ telling anyone who asks my age! maybe because most people guess that i am 24 or 25, so to let them in on my real age is a real confidence booster. i guess people who are really vain or look really bad for their age are the only ones who have a problem being honest about it. i would rather tell someone i was 5 or 10 OLDER than i actually am, just so people would be amazed at how "great i look". i don't understand the concept of saying that you are actually 5 or 10 YOUNGER than your real age- why is that??? so that when you walk away people can say "man, they look like CRAP for only being 30!!" see what i am saying??

Firstly, I think "lie" has been around every since the creation. Our mentality is not mature to take and give true information all the time. We often feel we might lose our security and life if we tell the truth / being honest. We don't want people to control / manipulate us by knowing what's really going on our mind. To cut it short, "fear" makes us "lie."

Some people want to please others and lie to do so...others just lie to themselves and are afraid of getting old
It's difficult for me to be honest because there are certain things I can't do as a 17 year old and I try to pass for 18 lol

I just don't tell if I don't want to. I've posted my age every where once on Yahoo. But yet most people still ask on here how old I am. It must be they don't check out any thing about me. So I removed all the information. I have to laugh about people's profile. They blank. Most people are afraid. Afraid of what. Mostly themselves.

Society has set us up by celebrating youth and ignoring the aging. Now that the baby boomers are aging that trend is changing. However, people still lie about their age because they fear being judged by the asker. Funny how when we are young, we lie up...when we are older we lie...down? Well, you know what I mean. I am not afraid to tell my age, I am 30-15 and proud of it! (That makes me in my late-thirties...very late thirties). LOL

i dont think age has got anything to do with being honest or not, its the person all together.

I've been honest since the day I was born, and have also been criticized for it. You can't win either way.

Well, it's not really a universal human difficulty....It depends from person-to-person.

But I'd imagine that it's a function of wanting to seem "better" or feel "better" with who/what we are. "Young" people would want to seem older, wiser or more mature. "Old" people would want to deny aging, would want to think they're hip or still attractive or available.

there is no place for HONESTY. I think the main reason is the competetion. One who gives exam from absolutely on his/her own - gains less marks than a cheater.
