Hmm...John Petrucci is more technical and his music is more conformed to a progressive rock format, but Steve Vai is a little more spiritually expressive in his style. I would have to say Steve Vai cause Firegarden kicks ***.

Steve Vai, no contest. He is one of the few masters of the fretboard. He can make the guitar sing his inner feelings with no effort whatsoever. Very few people ever come close to having the natural talent that Vai has.

John Petrucci fits into a broader category of excellent guitarists but many others are at the top of their game, just pick any 80's rock group and you'll find them.

They are both very good guitar players. If you are also asking me for who my favorite guitar player is, however, I'll have to vote for Joe Satriani.
