If you're saying it sincerely because you were wrong and need to let someone know...it gains you integrity.

If you're saying it to get someone off your case, and you don't really mean it...you lose integrity.

If the person you're apologizing to is gracious and you're sincere, they gain and so do you.

If the person is not gracious, and you're sincere...you really gain.

If the person is not gracious, and you're not sincere, you're both losers and deserve each other....

It's sad, so sad
It's a sad, sad situation
And it's getting more and more absurd
It's sad, so sad
Why can't we talk it over
Oh it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word

So it goes in the song! To think of it, it doesn't costs one much to say the powerful words "I'm sorry" but if it can be done, it goes a long way to recover something lost. Having said and realised the goodness of saying it, I'm pretty good at saying it now. And, no regrets!

It should cost nothing. As a matter of fact it is quite healthy saying sorry gives one a sense of enlightenment. And it often saves relationships

Not a single thing. Absolutely Free. Gratis.
The best part of sorry is, you can make as many mistakes as you can, but when you say sorry, the MOMENT IS PRICELESS.

This is sponsored by Mastercard where every moment is Priceless....hehehehehhehe, no wonder my friggin card is over-loaded. hehehehe
