Working long long hours and all the time its the tedium of the rat-race. You'd get the same thanks anyway if you hadn't bothered your **** and just stayed at home. No one is handing out medals in the end.

Isn't free-market Capitalism great!

There once was this extremely US successful stock broker who went for holidays in Mexico. He saw a fisherman coming back from work around 11am with a load of fish he was selling to the people at the pier.

The stock broker approached the fisherman and asked why he didn't work harder and come back later.

The fisherman replied that he enjoyed his life, loved fishing and spent his free time with his friends and family and they needed of nothing.

The stockbroker replied that he should work harder, borrow some money buy a second boat, get them also to work harder, and soon he could, using his profits expand his fleet further. Then invest in refrigerated boats who could stay at sea for days and come back with hulls filled with fish. In another 15 years he could float his fishing company on the stock market.

The fisherman asked, and what would I do then?

The stockbroker said, oh, you wouldn't have to work, you could go fishing in the morning, then come back early and spend the rest of the day with your family and friends.

I like the anecdotal answer above about the fisherman but if I was answering this i would say no.. but what should we replace it with.

Marx wrote extensively about K (capitalism) and in his communist manifesto he said that 3 things must happen in order for K to survive - 1) enforced destruction of the means of production (e.g.WW2) 2) expansion into new markets (e.g. China) 3) more thorough exploitation of existing markets (e.g. marketing to under 5's).

Capitalism will eventually run its course as it will arrive at a point once more where only mass destruction will produce the markets it needs to continue.

Communism on the face of it does not seem to have been a solution, however, it has not been properly tested as both Russia and China went from Feudal to so called Communist missing out on capitalism altogether. Oposition to communism by the west (in the form of counter revolutionaries - e.g the white army in russia) has resulted in secret police, party leaders and systems etc which are not communistic. Communism should be a reaction to capitalism and I believe that one day we will have a system which is more like communism was intended to be. In fact the world of Star Trek depicts this utopia as emerging from the failure of capitalism.

And I agree wholeheartedly. Many peoples in traditional human societies work for just a few hours a day, and have enough to eat, with plenty of quality family time and leisure time with their friends.

Since they live in sympathy with the land, they have repairable environments because they aren't destroying everything around them wiith chemicals and toxins. There are many models of society other than the Capitalist paradigm, we should try to find something else.
