Gateway products have been the best for my money. I bought a desktop years ago and NEVER had a problem with it. Now I've got 3 Gateway laptops, each with different capabilities and have not had one problem.
Don't forget to save out about $150 to get the student version of MS Office. They only put a 60 day trial version on when you buy it.

Definitely a Macbook or Macbook Pro depending on your budget.
With the new Intel processors you can run windows in tandem, so get the best of both worlds.
If you're looking for gaming, go with the Macbook Pro as it has it's own graphics card, the normal macbook has a virtual graphics processor.
Otherwise, I would go with the 2ghz Macbook with a gig of ram... oh hang on I did! It puts my 2.6 P4 to shame, and my G4 PowerMac is now just propping up my desk leg.

Depends on the specs... Personally, I prefer IBM cos been using it for years and it still works great! But I am getting a new laptop now... HP DV2000 series... the specs are great...

MAC or HP
but review your requirements more closely.. if you can give me your exact requirements on what you want to do on it or how and where you want to use it.. i may be able to recommend you a better configuration that you can match with at high street and a pay for something that will be worth spending the money..
cheers..

If you want to go for cheap then Acer, little costly thinkpad and best in all Sony or Toshiba.
