Its different for everyone. With me, I bleed no heavier than a normal period, maybe for a little longer, the pain is about the same as period pains but sometimes it spreads into my back as well. I've had scans each time to make sure there was nothing left, although if she was only 5 weeks (very very early on) , the cells should break down and be absorbed back into her body, rather than everything needing to be evacuated.
With most people the damage is more emotional than physical

Miscarriage is God's way of saying "Something was wrong" at 5 weeks pregnant, she will probaby pass everything through, but she must be monitored for 24 hours for temerature rise, fever etc. She will need to make an immediate appt with the Ob/Gyn so she can check that miscarriage was a whole miscarriage or partial. If it is whole, she will be able to leave without concequence. If it is partial she will be booked in for a D&C, this involves just going in vaginally and cleaning up what was left behind. If this is not done, it can lead to infection or even an inability to conceive again.
Sorry for the loss

Miscarriage is never a pleasant thing-losing something and damage to the body...the losing is usually the worst part... only if there is extreme bleeding will there be another doctors appointment unless told to do so. Try to eat more- some nutritional weight may be needed to be replaced- trying to re-balance the body.
