Use a string or cord that you can send down on either side of the book, tie the ends together at the bottom to make a long loop so that the book is now in the middle of the loop and lift up from the top.
Hope the end of the story is worth all the effort!

Get some string, drop it down, take it under book and tie to another bit of string you've dropped from the other side and secured at the top. Pull.

Bit Heath Robsinson, but I've retrieved stuff like that.

Use the long style cooking tongs. They are easier to control than a coat hanger and if you want to push the book down wards it's alot easier; the tongs won't bend. You could use the tongs to pull the book up if it's not too wedged in there.

I usally use a hanger to push down, or pull up items which have fallen behind my radiator!

Radiators usually hang on wall brackets. They are heavy, and of course connected to the flow and return pipe, but with assistance, you may just be able to lift the rad upwards, and pull it JUST SLIGHTLY off the wall, to let the book fall down. And then, you just might get water everywhere...

Get a long thin stick, wiggle it up your nose until your ears tickle then use it to remove you brain... brain is very sticky so should help to attach to said book to retrieve it again...
