Are these bad for the environment? As they certainly produce a lot of smoke and must have Co2 emmissions.

wood burning stoves do produce a lot of smoke but it depends on how you set your damper. you can set it so that it burns cleaner and that helps cut down on carbon now think of it this way wood as in a tree produces more o2 during its life than co2 it puts out during burning. as far as heat goes check into corn stoves for a environmental friend i have 2.

depends on how the fire is doing. if you give the fire enough air input, smoke will be minimum and the wood will burn cleaner. if you dont give it air while the wood is still flaming then youll get a lot of smoke. once you get a good bed of hot coals you can regulate the air flow to a minimum and the coals will burn for a long time and not produce much smoke. they definitely have CO2 emissions. CO2 is a fact of life. almost everything that burns produces CO2. YOU have CO2 emissions. while CO2 may be the bulk of exaust gasses, it is not nearly as harmful as all the other emissions such as unburned hydrocarbons and other toxic fumes from fuel.

I used a wood stove to heat my house for several years, and was very happy with it. It is environmental sound. Trees are a plant with a harvest life like any other plant, and consuming them for heat is a safe and effective way of reducing waste wood from the environment.

It's zero net CO2 emmissions, -since it sucked CO2 out of the atmosphere while the tree was growing.

no great for the environment! We live in the environment. Wood burns natually and there are no carcinogens. It's natural burning. What more could you ask for?
