What can I say, people like contraversy and they don't like to have to think independently. They are fine with being told what to think and love to regurgatate the facts that have been burned into their brains.

And by the way, 2000 years only applys to the christians. Jews are 5766. Its a tiny detail, but I fall into the trap you speak of just as easily as any one else. I love to argue my point.

Your right, but I guess people need to hold onto something. Religion often promises something better than the **** world your talking about and bottom line is its a human need.

I will say that as I was brought up as a Catholic, I find comfort and strength in turning to God and asking Mary for intercession when things go wrong. Its nice to believe that there is a point to life and I think that the moral values are intrinsic to a respectful society.

The problem, however, comes with fanaticism and that can take many forms. Many people have died for their faith and I'm not just talking about muslim extremists - protestants and catholics have taken turns to persecute each other over the centuries, when all we are talking about is a different strands of Christianity. So the bottom line is that institutionalised religion is inherantly intolerant of any other faith - if people didnt start making up their own religions e.g. Henry VIII, and the mormon guy etc - then there would only be one church which you can choose to be part of or not - religion should be a personal thing - about your relationship with God and outside the context of external influences. There will always be pain and suffering as well as moments of joy and elation - thats life!!

Yes - I find myself rising to the theist bait and leaving comments and then wondering why I did so, as there is no way any argument of mine, no matter how succinct or watertight I feel it to be, will change such entrenched positions. But I suppose it is a cathartic effect; If I read something I consider absolutely outrageous, I do feel better if I kick off against it rather than just having a mutter to myself.
But the trouble is, these 2000 year old philosophies still influence a depressing number of people, including the US president and our own dear leader, so although I would love to see them just wither away, they don't seem likely to do so any day soon!

Well we have hated each other for years, slammed each other with blames for a long time and still we are where we started from. It is none of one's business to interfere in other's personal beliefs as long they are not negated to the social norms. The old philosophies if checked out prpoerly by people who seem to scream about them on internet, nowhere tell you to hate a fellow man or take them as inferior. If there has been any then that was of those people who were not worth reading.

Isnt this time to change the world for better. Please give this a thought. If we all would we will be able to make a better world with least hatred.

Do not confuse religion with philosophy. Religion is about faith in things that cannot be proven to exist. Philosophy, 2000 years old, older, or younger, concerns itself with the human condition which is the same now and will be the same always.
But why do questions of religion/philosophy get so much attention?
It could be that all people hold these things to be important.

Because people are generally incredibly self-centered, and think they have all the answers. Furthermore, they require that other people believe their ideas. Conservative Christians and Radical Islamics are good examples.

People like this who are not in political power will scold and punish anyone who doesn't think the way they do. When people like this come into political power, wars are inevitable.

The most extreme cases are those who think they actually have some sort of divine authority. For example, Conservative Christians might tell you that you're going to Hell, even though the authority to make that determination is strictly up to their God, Jesus. Radical Islamics believe that the clerics who convince them to become martyrs are agents of Allah.

It's all very sick behaviour and should be avoided at all costs.

Hmmmm! Yes, why should I be following a 2,000 year old philosophy? Why? Well, because it still changes lives.
For instance, I know of a man who used to be in charge of Colombian Drug Cartel on the West Coast of the US. (He wrote a book.) He rose to power and was in charge of the his territory for about 15 years. Finally, the Feds caught up with him and put him in prison for life, or the next thing to it. While he was in prison he gave his life to Jesus. He got out of prison not long after that and entered a seminary to study to become a minister. He graduated with a masters and is now an evangelist, going around the country and world, telling his story and showing people what Christ can do for even the most evil of individuals.
Stories like this are legion.
Prostitutes, drug addicts, alcoholics, criminals, sex addicts, murderers, are changed because of the power of God. The minister who wrote "Amazing Grace" was a slave trader before he became a Christian. When a person is in Christ "he is a new creation, old things have passed away; all things have become new."
I can tell you from personal experience that becoming a Christian made a dramatic change in my life, and the strange thing is that I wasn't inclined to change. I had no desire to give up the behaviors that had caused me so much grief. Slowly, however, interest in these things waned and I gave them up, one by one. No thunderbolts, no thumbscrews, no "brainwashing", I just didn't care about them any more.
It is impossible for me to prove to you, or anyone, that God exists. But I look at how this "crap" changes people, I see how people are willing to risk their lives to help others. I see the hospitals, orphanages, children's camps, schools, shelters being built because Christ said to take care of those in need. I see care being given to people with no regard to social status, income, race, creed, or any other consideration. I see people who have been told their entire life that they were hardly human becoming aware that God loves them and considers them just as important as most elite, rich, and powerful person they have ever heard of.
The truth of the matter is that if Jesus Christ came to your front door and perfomed a miracle in front of your very eyes that that would not cause you to believe in him. He performed plenty of miracles when he was on earth and he was still crucified. This was because, in spite of the evidence before them, the people who witnessed these miracles chose, rather, to go their own way. They wanted to be their own god and make their own decisions concerning their life. This is still true today. Nothing has changed. And that is the reason why you will continue to believe that Christianity is nothing but a 2,000 year old philosophy.
