In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Satan or Lucifer (the shining one or the light bearer) was a spirit of light. He out-shone every other spirit in heaven. There was a council in heaven where a plan presented by the Almighty Father to all his spirit children. His plan was to create a world, an earth where his spirit children will live in mortality (having physical bodies) for a season. Here they will be tried and tested if they will be obedient to God's commandments. The plan was presented, and God asked, " Who will execute the plan". Lucifer came forward and said, " I will do it. No one of your children will be lost because they will obey me and will have no choice. But after that, you have to give me your power and glory." Them came another voice, Jesus, God's first born of the spirits. He said, "Here I am. take me, but your will be done and the glory is still yours." Because Lucifer tried to usurp God's power, he was cast down to earth and became the father of all lies to deceive and blind men to the truth. He became Satan symbolized by the snake, the lowest of all creatures.

According to ancient Hebrew commentary (also accepted by the Roman Catholic Church), when God created the angels he created them with their faces turned from him, and one-by-one, God asked them if they would allow themselves to be turned to face him (the idea being that once one saw the face of God -- also know as "The Beatific Vision" -- one could never be turned away from it).
According to the story, when God reached Satan, Satan refused because he wanted to turn himself to see the face of God. In other words, he did not want a gift, he wanted to achieve it under his own powers. And this constitutes the sin of pride -- the refusal of Grace.
Augustine later used this to explain the nature of sin, by saying that what Satan wanted (to see the face of God) was good, but that he wanted it in the wrong way. Thus, many who sin want the right things, but Augustine says, that isn't enough. You must want the right thing in the right way.
Hope this answer helps.

"Why satan become a devil?" Probably because there are ignorant souls like you who never bothered to learn how to spell, read, write, or articulate a sentence. *I* absorbed Lucifer and became He when I realized there was absolutely NO hope for this world. RAIN DOWN THE EVIL, Mr. Yahweh! Locusts? No problem! I used to collect their shells when I was a kid. Um...what else you got? Turn me to stone? Bring it, sshitbag! *I* AM LUCIFER - HE who bringeth the LIGHT....aka WISDOM.

According to Milton's Paradise Lost, Satan became envious of Jesus. Once called Lucifer, and an angel, when Jesus was pronounced the second-in-command, Lucifer became jealous and tried to overthrow the Kingdom of God.
You can check this through Wikipedia, and searching "Paradise Lost."

His real name was something like lutherus, something to do with light. He didn't like God and wanted to be better than Him. St. Micahel the Archangel pushed him down into hell, and he became a devil.
