Economics is useful in business and you can generally get a better professional job with a qualification in a business orientated subject like economics than you would with a degree in literature which the business world classes as just books and stories.
I would rather study literature as I enjoy reading and you can learn about yourself and others in everything you read. Learning to "read between the lines" and discover the hidden nuances is a way of learning without even realising you are learning.
Plus how many films live up to the promise of the book, the book is always better.

The study of economics has a direct impact on life as compared to literature. And I think most people are interested in making tangible billions than cracking down brains with literature.

Economics is a social science seeking to analyze and describe the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Economics studies how individuals and societies seek to satisfy needs and wants. Due to globalisation, every one wants to survive and become rich otherwise he will perish.

Simply because far too many individuals want to see the quantification of numbers. Literature is far too literal, and far too difficult to quantify....
