Lots of bad answers to this... first thing.. .calm down and relax. It's normal.

Every computer on the Internet has an IP Address. Imagine it as a house address and all the information like a letter. Well you need an address so the letter arrives at the right house so, you need an IP Address so that the information reaches your computer. This is all set up in the background and you never know about it. Your ISP automatically gives you an IP address when you go online.

Therefore, when you communicate with any webpage, send an email or chat to someone your IP address is transmitted. It has to be for the information to get back to you. Many piece of Forum software collect the IP address as standard so that if people post inappropriate content on the forum their IP address is stored.

When you have someone's IP address you can very easily find out which ISP that IP address belongs to.

This is all perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. All these people saying "drop IE" or other such things... NO! Whatever Browser you use your IP address will still be available, it has to otherwise the information will never get to your computer.

He can get the info in various ways. First He got your ISP from your IP address (your IP address is your address on the internet. Everytime you use the internet you will be given an IP address). You normally cannot hide your IP address. If you have an IP address and go to sites like http://www.samspade.org and enter the IP address then you can find the ISP (or company) that IP address is owned by.
He can get other information if he runs a web server and you access his server. Your web browser gives information about your computer when it connects. Some of the info your browser gives is the Operating System you use, the exact web browser you use. Things like that.
You should drop IE for Firefox for other reasons as well...

First things first .. use Firefox rather than IE

www.mozilla.org

It is better by far (I think you will see many of its features appearing in IE7 :)

Secondly dont panic .. the information that they have is not particularly scary .. ip addresses are easy to spot and they will be in a 'range' owned by your ISP .. so its not as if the person is looking over your shoulder ...

If you want to see what sort of info is avaliable have a look at

www.anonymizer.org

May be check your Firewall to see if you have accidently given access to a program on one of the secure ports. Chances are it's too late they have already got all the information they want.

You didn't say if you have checked your Anti Virus program for updates or even done a spyware scan. A lot of antivirus programes don't actually scan for spyware.

He can get lots more. They can learn which updates you have for Windows, what version of Media Player you're using, all kinds of stuff. Mainly they get this through loopholes in Java script. First I would drop IE. It's a wide open door to your system full of flaws. Try Firefox. It's much more secure and totally customizable. One of the inbred security measures in FF is to block Java scripts to prevent loopholes like that. And there are tons more security extensions to choose from as well.
