I would like to know if there are any special precautions I can take to scare off any snakes from the brush, leaves, and wood piles in my yard before I start moving and clearing all of the debri from my yard. I have moved some rotting logs and leaves by riding my mower to make a bunch of sound in hopes to scare any snakes off. I then sit on the riding mower while it is running while I pushed the logs over with a hoe. Now that I have to go in the area on foot to rake up the leaves and other debri, is there a way I can scare any snakes off so I don't get bitten before attempting to enter the area? My riding or push mowers will not fit in between the trees to run over the leaves, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I have a huge phobia of snakes of any kind.

Your huge phobia is unfounded- they are more afraid of us! Doing the mower-noise-vibration is NOT what you want to do- you are agitating them- just do a normal type clean-up-they will know you are there and will probably leave- nests on the other hand are alittle different but unless you're cleaning something undisturbed for the last 5 years don't worry so much.

I can understand your fear... I too just moved into an area that is known to have snakes. Get informed about the ones you can find in your area. Knowledge is power for someone with fear.. Dress & wear good shoes, gloves when working but for the most part the snakes are more afraid of you.. let them get away and they will. They say most of the time someone get bit by a snake because they try to handle them. Just be careful...I know you can do it!

I also have a fear of snakes, and I live in the country. But to answer your question, snakes really don't like people, and generally will find a place to stay that is not as busy. Your activity in the area way be enough to drive them away, however gloves and boots are always a good idea.

I not sure that noise will scare the snakes. Sugeest you wear high boots(knne high mud boots would do),ling sleeve shirt, long pants tucked into the boots, leather gloves and lon-sleeved shirt. If you have a dog take him with you. Make sure you have a hoe handy, Go carefully and slowly allowing the snakes to slither away as you work. Once you have most of their good hiding places gone they will move to your neighbors. Excue typos. Gioo luck.

you can't scare snakes away, so just be aware that they are there and watch for them, watch where you put your hands and feet , use a rake or hoe to move things, snakes like to hide under things, remember snakes don't like you either and want to scare you off too, chances are 90 % of any you see are going to be harmless... just be aware
