My father in law was a physician for nearly 60 years and asked himself the same question when he was a young doctor. As a result he studied the patients in his practice over his entire lifetime. Because he had a small practice it was easy for him to do this research - the same patients came to him for decades. The result of his study was that ALL of the patients he saw frequently (in other words, they had illness often) were negative thinkers and complainers. Those he rarely saw were pleasant and good natured, even when very ill. Those patients were rarely sick and recovered fully. He stood by the theory that emotional attitude is a significant factor in number of illnesses and speed of recovery.
