The same thing it is under any operating system, a "Serial Advanced Technology Attachment" - basically, the newer way we connect hard drives to our motherboards now. In the past computers used IDE connections and drives - now SATA hard drives and cables are used. The cables are physically smaller allowing more airflow in the computer cases, and are faster and more reliable.

So, a SATA drive is just your hard drive.
