Its probably primarily a family thing but this would be related to religion in the past.

My dad is from Anfield so i had no choice but to support Liverpool! Up to the age of about 6 or 7 i honestly thought Everton was a swear word!! So in answer to your question you dont choose Liverpool or Everton, your born a supporter!

It's not a religious thing, although the media would like everyone to believe it is. Most people support whoever their dads supported. Liverpool have traditionally drawn support from further out of the city (Runcorn, Widnes, Warrington etc) and Everton from the centre.
Certainly from personal experience a lot of the people I know from near the middle of Liverpool are Evertonians.
But with everything there are rules and exceptions.

It is definitely not a religion thing as many families are divided.
Here is a good Example.

Say i have 2 sons and the one supports the Reds like me and the other supports Everton like his mother. There are many families in Liverpool like this.
The Merseyside Derby is the only Derby where the cops do not have separate the fan's. the reason for this is because many families are split, half red half blue.

I think it might have something to do with the fact, that Everton founded in 1878 played at Anfield from 1884 - 1891, when the ground was bought by John Houlding he wanted to put the rent Anfield up from 100.00 to 250.00 a year, Everton members objected and moved to Goodison Park. With an empty ground and only 3 players left, he decided to form his own Football Club, and on 15th March 1892 Liverpool Football Club was born. John McKenna was director and he signed 13 Scottish Professionals for the new club.

A joke for mancunians: It just depends which scarf they nick first.

More seriously, their support is actually very mixed. Very often you get different family members supporting different teams.

If you live in Liverpool you support Everton. If you are a glory hunter who knows nothing about football and you think Stevie Gerrard is cute you support Liverpool. Bit like Manchester. You support ManUre if you live within the M25
