"In heat" Does refer to an female animal when they are ready to mate due to reproductive hormones. Also known as the estrous or oestrous cycle.
"Horny" "being sexually aroused and/or desiring sexual gratification (slang term, the erect penis being likened to a horn"
Although men seem to almost always be in the mood women are usually only horny around their menstrual cycle.
Besides when ever I'm horny I always say I'm in heat.

No -- animals go into heat... that's like their monthly cycle (it's different than monthly but the equivalent)
Horny is what people feel when they want to have sex. It's more about a state of mind than an urge brought on by a biological cycle.

No in heat means the dog is ready to have sex and seeing as humans and dolphins are the only animals that mate for pleasure then that means the dog can't be horny.

No, both are different things. being in heat is a scientific terms and it deals with sexual cycle which is different for different species. e.g every women is on heat once in a month when her body temperature is 1 F more then normal temperature. The term "Heat" is more oftenly used for animals whn a female allows male to meet.
whereas being "Horney" depends on mood. Animal can't go horney and wait for "Heat" , whereas women can be on "heat" as well as "Horney" at any time.
Thats all folk
