Here's a good site I found.

I don't know personally the chances, but I do know that plugged in devices mean danger during storms.

This is all based on what could happen if lightning struck your house.
You shouldn't use any electrical equpiment because the electricity could travel down the cord. This includes a tv/computer/phone. You also should not use any water (ie, shower, dishes) because you are using metal pipes with water flowing through them. Both metal and water are terrific conductors of electricity. I don't think there is anything wrong with sitting on your porch. Just try not to get wet.

Everything you mentioned has a greater risk of causing you to get struck by lightning.

The key thing to realize is that lightning always follows the path of least electrical resistance.

All those activities (running electrical current, being near ionized water, being outside, talking on phone which puts you near conductive wiring) put you near areas of reduced electrical resistance and/or cause you to become a possible conduit for electrical current.

Lightning is very powerful and very unpredictable. If you do not wish to be struck by lightning, you need to place yourself in an area that is highly insulated from electricity.

Lightning is very dangerous if it ever strike you and the possibility of death is high. If you live in a place with high occurrences of lightning, your house needs to be well protected with lightning rods and proper grounding of your electrical appliances. If your house is well protected then it is safe to do those activities you have listed. However, use some common sense, if the weather is very bad with lots of lightning, take a break from those stuff for while. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Hey Jennifer,,,, I highly do Not recommend you do any of the things you mentioned if there is a lighting storm nearby..... maybe sit on the porch if it is well covered and back away from the open area?? maybe..... I watched a woman getting out of her car,, and a bolt of lighting hit right behind the car,,knock her out cold ,,,,, she only had one foot on the ground....

be careful around it.....

good luck

It depends on whether you have a lightning pole on your roof.

If yes, then the risk is almost zero.

If no, the risk is high.

Also depend if your house is the tallest thing around.
