I think most people are sadder as teens. I think it is a combination of factors. For one thing you understand the seriousness of some things much better. Also, the hormones can accentuate and exaggerate emotional responses. You are more likely to experience sad situations. You know more people and are less sheltered so it's more likely that something bad will happen and that you will hear about it. You are under a lot of pressure to do well in school, find a boyfriend, get a job, be an athlete, get into a good college. It is very likely at some point that you will fall short in at least one of these areas. And yeah, boy trouble is a big cause for sadness.

It's just one of the many un-fun things about being a teenager (right up at the top of the list with cramps and acne). It's probably just your hormones adjusting. There seems to be a lot of that when you're a teenager. Don't worry though; you will grow out of it. It is pretty easy to feel sad in high school; boy problems, grades, what to do on Friday night... those problems will still be there when you graduate and go to college (if that is what you choose to do), but the older you get the better prepared you are to deal with those things as they come along. I will say this; as horrible as junior high and high school seems sometimes you will miss it. I know that sounds crazy, but there it is. You have so much to be happy about; you see your friends every single day! Your day is pretty much over at 4:00. If you're like most kids you still live at home (I know you're probably thinking that's a bad thing at the moment) and you enjoy the luxury of not having any living expenses. You probably pay your gas $ and when you go out with your friends. You have it pretty easy right now. Cheer up. It's all good!

Princess, You have received some good advice here. I hope that "I Love Danny" comes back to read all your answers, because this answer is really for her. Honey, I'm sorry about your losses, especially the loss of your Dad. You have every reason to feel sadness and grief: maybe, your boyfriend just couldn't cope with a loss that huge. Don't worry, there'll be other boyfriends, but you only ever have one Dad. In time, it won't hurt as much. Perhaps, you might want to look for a grief-support group in your area. Good luck to you!

I think as a teenager you are suddenly faced with a lot of challenges and life lessons that you didn't encounter when you were a child. Life gets more complicated; hearts get broken, best friends part, people die. All of these things seem to hit harder and more frequently when you are in high school. Keep your chin up and remember that with every year that passes, you are gaining lots of intelligence and spirit that will help you cope with the stuff of everyday life.

I think sometimes that happens as so much is going on around you and you are finding out things that you haven't even heard of before.
There is pressure from the media on how people should look and act and it's directed at teenagers so yes.

i was sad as a teen, i felt suicidal at times, i think it`s because things become more real, u r coming into adulthood & there is more hormones in ur body, it helps to talk to somebody, a friend, mum, dad or maybe a sibling, confide in somebody, share ur feelings before they consume u. i knew a 14yr old who comitted suicide, she waited till everybody left home 4 the day & shot herself. the world lost a wonderfull person on that day & so did her poor family, dont let that happen 2 u or ur family.

I'm depressed right now because of the pressure put on me by my step-dad to get A+ and have perfect friends, which wouldn't be a problem if the people that he would consider 'perfect' weren't such a** holes. Which of course means that all my friends are hated and I can no longer see them because of their 'imperfections'.
