Whiteheads and blackheads are the first stage of acne. Acne develops on hair follicles which have sebaceous glands attached to them. These sebaceous glands produce an oil called sebum. Due to some reasons, the sebum changes in quantity and quality resulting in scales on the hair follicle. These scales block the skin pores causing acne. This blockage of the skin pores is the beginning of acne.
The first stage of this blockage shows up as blackheads and whiteheads. These are also called as comedones. A comedone is a sebaceous follicle that is plugged and filled with sebum, dead cells, etc. An open comedone is called a blackhead because of its blackish appearance. A blocked comedone is called as a whitehead. It is a small bump in the skin with skin like color. A whitehead has a closed mouth and the blackhead has an open mouth. The black color of blackheads is not due to dirt as some believe, but it is the oxidized sebum.
Treatment And Care:
Don't squeeze whiteheads And blackheads yourself. That may leave permanent scars on the skin and also cause infection. The best approach is to go to a dermatologist, who will pick them open, if required under sterile conditions. Note that Acne scars can be permanent. Wash your face gently with lukewarm water and mild soap to remove excess sebum and dead skin. Do this twice a day. Don't be harsh on the skin. Acne takes time to clear. Apply any topical cream that may be prescribed by your dermatologist. Acne treatment requires patience. Some of us think that washing affected area many times a day may clear acne fast. That may rather further inflame the acne. Be gentle and patient.

Use an exfoliater or those gel that can help get rid of dead skin/ blackheads/ whiteheads. For those gel types, there are many types in the market. But the one available at The Face Shop works the best for me. It is in a white tube and has a violet cap...costs about $29 if I remember correctly. Consists of pearl extracts.
How to use: (1) Put on dry face and rub in circular motions for couple of mins, would feel small bits coming out --> that's the dry skin + dirt + oil + blackheads, etc. (2) Do not wash your face yet....then wet ur hands and rub your face in circular motions for a little while more. (3) Wash off

Hi Sam B,
Good morning. Through my beauty experience, your face may has condition as below: -
a) Oily skin - sebaceous oil glands secrete too much oil. Dead skin then accumulates, plugging pores and preventing natural skin functions and allowing bacteria to build up and blackheads, white heads & other skin problemS to form.
For long term if didn't has proper care because of the infection occurs in hair follicle in the sebaceous gland. This may cause dilated pores and severe scarring.
The summary is open pore and complexion of skin will be worse gradually.
The suggestion solution from me is:-
a) Take food supplement to release and improve your skin complexion such as:
- B-Complex which enables the skin to release itself of dead cells
- Beta Carotene which cleanses the too much oil to form whiteheads or blackheads
- Use purifying cleanser and toner daily (2 - 3 times per day)
- Use the refining polisher and mineral mask twice a week
- Enough sleep and rest, think positively and do regular exercise (3 times per week)
I believed that if you follow the above way, your skin condition will get better and better slowly.
Of course if do facial as deep cleansing for the skin, the better result you will GET but depending the facial must handle by skin specialist / professional.
ALL THE BEST! BEAUTIFUL GIRL!

if you have a lot then perhaps you need to go and see a dermatologist and they will recommend proper treatment. If you just have one huge big one (especially the night before a big night out!) then I always dab toothpaste on it. I find it helps!
