uh. get good skating shoes. Etnies, Globe, DVS, those are all good. and the best board for beginners are Zero boards.
if you can get both of those then its real easy. before you can learn to do all the tricks, you need to be able to just jump onto a skateboard and skate around easily. thats what you need to learn first. also when your trying to learn it, practice as long and as much as possible, thats the best way to go, believe me.
when yourready to ollie and heelflip/kickflip email me Steelerdanny@aol.com

It's that darn gravity issue. I've been trying to get rid of it aswell. Perhaps a skate park would be a great place to start...there's more experienced people over there that can help with with this matter.

study some skate tapes for techniques... (im me for online links)
strength your core
work on balance
also word of wise: don't drink when you skate. bad.bad.bad.
so ya you can't be a pro overnight w/ skateboarding
it takes time .. even years! but it's like learning to ride a bicycle-you never forget once you've got it.
also could even be something as simple as shoes.
just keep skating.. you'll get better ever day.

Each and every fall you got more experience, dont take that as a disadvantage, you will be expert in scatting very soon. If see any interrview of any old players they speak about their experiences during their practise. What you are facing is very common.
