These are all very good answers. I think, however, that men may not necessarily be intimidated. Maybe when a man sees a beautiful woman, he just assumes that she's involved with someone else, so why bother? It's sad, but it's the way we are. Women do the same thing sometimes, but usually avoid good-looking men because they assume they're stuck up. I experienced the same thing when I was younger because I was really good looking when I was in my 20s. I laughed it off. If good looking people were more friendly, maybe we wouldn't have this problem.

i could answer a slightly different question:
"why are some persons intimidated by a beautiful person?"

i think beauty, in all her manifestations, is a form of art. any person who has trouble with sensitiviness will be intimidated by the contemplation of beauty.
by "intimidated" I mean some kind of stimulation on the "observer". In the case of the beauty of a living human being, well, the person could be frozen o could seem "stupid". I think this is the origin of the "mito" of men being intimidated by beautiful women.

Seeing a beautiful woman reminds me of how I'm a below average dirtball with nothing to offer. That's why I am intimidated.

he can be intimidated because of the thought that he can't measure up to the beauty before him or her. he's got a low self-regard, while being anxious to compete even if the odds are against him.

Because you are yet to realise that you have other qualities to please people, yet you just haven't discovered them. You will soon learn that beauty is only skin deep.
