I mean seriously, there are so many laws that a normal person (this does not include coragryph) could not possibly keep abreast of. There are so many laws that it is near to impossible not to break at least one in a day...usually because you are not aware of it. There is presently in motion a disease called legalism. Every law seems to further restrict and control each and every action a person makes on a normal, everyday basis. I understand the need for laws, without them there would be chaos, anarchy and such.
Why not more deregulation? What is so wrong with freedom that makes good people want to control the actions of others? Why has a good idea (freedom) become such a great pain to maintain?

Here is one simple example: I have a few legal animals on my property. I have very little room for my tools. I want to build another storage shed so that I can contain them. However I am unable to because it is not legal to have another shed. It's my property, I pay the taxes...but I can't. Doesn't make sense.
I understand that nice homes in great areas do not want their home to decrease in value because I have two sheds. Or my yard is not their idea of a yard. I understand the need to be a good neighbor. However to protect my neighbor form my needs and wants on my property I am restricted...it's ridiculous...this is one of many things that bother me about a free, restrictive place we call America.

Actually, the hundreds of new laws each session are because of the way the legislative process works.

Many of them are budget allocations, since every time Congress spends money that has to be done through a bill. Same with any changes or repeals of existing laws. Those each need to be part of a bill, and go through the legislative process.

But I agree with you. There are way too many regulations, both state and federal, and more get added every year. Some are necessary, but likely very few. And what's worse is that many of the old obsolete ones remain on the books.

But, here's the catch.... the way things used to work, there were very few statutory laws, and most regulations and requirements were found in the common law. Which means, judge-made law. Binding precedent. These numerous case precedents dealt with all the little details and interpretations, which kept the statutory codes fairly simple.

Yet, there is a great hue and cry against "activist judges" legislating from the bench. Mainly by people who don't realize that it's the judges job to do that. That's how the entire common law system works.

But, rather than allow judges to do that, starting a century or so ago, the legislatures started adding more and more statutory regulations, reclaiming control of exactly what was allowed and what was not, thus limited judges to more narrow interpretation, since the huge statutory codes covered most situations in their text. Which led to an explosion in the number of statutory laws.

At least, when judges made binding precedent, it was usually limited to specific factual situations, and didn't apply unless the case actually went to court. With statutory laws, everyone has to wade through them to try and figure out what is legal or not.

And very few of us actually do that for fun.

There are some things that still need straightening out with more laws...but stuff like abortion and gay marriage shouldn't be in lawmakers books.

Edit:

Okay, I see what you're saying. Yep, that would tick me off too. Are you in a gated community or something? I would petition either the community board or the city board or both.

I think that's an okay arguement. You paid for the land, you pay the taxes - you get to do what you want. If they want to tell you what you can do with the land, they can pay the effing taxes.

Unless of course you are renting...and then thats a whole nother ball game.

Even with its efforts at making countries police states, modern governments are unable to solve problems such as terror, drugs, crime, environmental and workplace safety and so on -- as demanded by their constituents.

So: as always, instead of doing anything constructive (perhaps impossible anyway, but also intrusive etc. as a quick reading of the USA PATRIOT Act will show), governments pass laws and conduct studies and appoint commisions.

Then, when asked why they are "doing nothing" about a social problem, and again when they are running for office, our politicians can say "why, we passed a law" or "we conducted a study" or "there's a commission working on that problem" or "I have a report on that".

To a politician, talking about something, or promising something, is tantamount to accomplishing it.

Here's the summary of a recent article from The Independent (UK):

"Blair's 'frenzied law making' : a new offence for every day spent in office
By Nigel Morris, Home Affairs Correspondent
Published: 16 August 2006

"Tony Blair's government has created more than 3,000 new criminal offences during its nine-year tenure, one for almost every day it has been in power.

"The astonishing tally brought accusations last night of a "frenzied approach to law-making" that contrasts with falling detection rates and climbing levels of violent crime.

". . ."
