There are two main platforms for the main kind of RNA expression chips.

One are oligonucleotide chips, in which small oligonucleotides are bound to the surface of the chip. These are sometimes called Affychips as they are largely manufactured by a company called Affymetrix.

The other kind are cDNA chips in which entire cDNA probes are bound to the chip. Many companies make these chips. They allow you to hybridise two different samples labelled with two different fluorophores, thus allowing you to compare expression levels between samples in one experiment. These are also sometimes called two-channel arrays for this reason (whereas the Affychips are one channel - only one sample can be hybridised at once).

There are also cDNA chips available for detecting single nucleotide polymorphisms in DNA.
