I was wondering why doctors do numerous blood tests prior to surgeries and operations? A friend of mine recently had some cosmetic work done and she had at least two or three blood tests done in the days leading up to the procedure. Do the doctors need to know whether the blood is healty in terms of its contents (bacteria/viruses)? What do they test for in some cases?

Thank you,

Alex

First, they are determining the type of blood and make a reservation in case the need arise (transfusion). Second, to check whether the patient is diabetic or suffering from hypertension or not. If diabetic or with hypertension, doctors will not conduct any surgery on the patient. Three, they are checking for any contaminants/contageous desease that maybe present in the patients blood. Fourth, whether the patient is having allergies to anti-biotics and other forms of medicine. I hope, the above answers will help.

Checking for anemia in case there is blood loss, checking for the body's clotting ability to make sure there won't be bleeding problems during the surgery. Also if there is diabetes because this impairs the healing process. Potassium level is important because your heart depends on a normal potassium level for proper functioning and if it is too low or high this could lead to problems or arrhythmias while you are under anesthesia.

Its mostly a routine and its helpful in making sure the red count is high enough in case there is some unexpected bleeding. they do a type and cross match in case you need a blood donation. they check for elevated white cells to see if you have any unknown infection and need antibiotics prior to surgery.

I know they do it they did it to me. The best place for that answer I think would be to ask a doctor because you are curious and want to know.
