If you have just started the job, and are mad going to work, just quit, it is not worth it. They do not deserve you. If you are qualified for a job, there are other jobs out there.
Sit down with the person that hired you, explain your frustration and question as to why you were not hired as you expected. If the results are not as you expected, I would quit on the spot, before you waste more time there. You will not be happy, nor do a good job if you resent them.

Find another job. You are now too bitter to be a good employee there. Once you find the other job, take the opportunity in the exit interview to ask why you weren't hired for that original position and why a seemingly inexperienced person was given that position instead. At least you won't leave wondering. And you will have acted in a professional manner and will have accomplished leaving a bridge unburnt in case the future brings you back to this company.

Is the company a good company to work for otherwise? What does this position offer? Better security? More benefits? I wouldn't let your personal feelings about the situation affect you for the long term...unfortunately the world isn't a perfectly fair place but throwing a fit and quitting because it just isn't fair isn't going to help you in any way. It does suck...and the person may have gotten the job because they knew someone or their parents knew someone...regardless of what the truth is, if they can't do the job the company isn't likely to keep them on for too terribly long if they are a complete failure. Look at it this way...maybe you are the safety net...maybe they felt comfortable letting someone who was a friend of a friend (or whatever) have a shot because they had you lined up...maybe they expect this person to fail and if you quit you won't be around to take your rightful place...stick it out...be mature about it and don't take it too personally. Show them that you are willing to hang out and work hard and you will succeed.

Your question has pretty much already been answered - if you're this mad about it, you ought to start sending out resumes.
However, I don't know why everyone here assumes this is a discrimination issue. It is possible that the other candidate has exceptional capabilities, or experience that will apply to some aspect of the job, but no direct experience.
You also may want to speak to HR or the hiring manager and ask why you weren't selected. They may give you a straightforward, candid answer. (this depends on the company)

If you took the job because it was a great company and this job seemed like a stepping stone for better things, it is worth a try to take up this issue and have a discussion with the hiring manager or the HR. I have often seen companies willing to shift people to other projects/roles if they can. If you feel you are getting stone walled even then, then looking out is always an option.

This hasn't happened to me but i say maybe work a bit and look for a job at the same time, if the person is doing a good job, well i guess become friends with them and maybe one day you might get the job. If they really absolutely suck at the job then QUIT!

I'd quit.
If you have the experience, go get the job you deserve somewhere else. Even if it takes a little time to find it, it's better than being miserable at your job. Going to a job you hate every day sucks the life out of you. If you're qualified, start looking for the right job.

Yeah, I'd look for another job. Don't quit until you've found one , though-- you might get behind on your bills and that'd SUCK bigtime. I understand how you feel, I've been with my company for a few years and the " favoritism" that I see everyday really pisses me off. That's why I am currently job-hunting right now!! I hate going to work and being miserable everyday. Good luck to you, whatever you decide to do!

Sounds like a bait and switch... but if someone with NO experience can do the job you wanted than maybe you should broaden your skills with more education. you know "specialize"
Don't quit until you have secured another job.
If you are not looking than the only person you can be mad at is yourself. Obtain the skills to get you "in demand" in your field.

No, I think I would call the Wage and Labor Board, and ask them what you should do. There are several things that could of happened that you don't know about and they would be able to get that information.
It stinks, I have been in a similar situation.
She was younger... hummm go figure...But I will say she was cuter also. Oh well....
