You are not capable of empathy.
Some experts (psychologists, psychiatrists, and other scientists) believe that not all humans have an ability to feel empathy or perceive the emotions of others. For instance, Autism and related conditions such as Asperger's syndrome are often (but not always) characterized by an apparent reduced ability to empathize with others. The interaction between empathy and autism spectrum disorders is a complex and ongoing field of research, and is discussed in detail below.
According to Simon Baron-Cohen's ideas, this absence might be related to an absence of theory of mind (i.e., the ability to model another's world view using either a theory-like analogy between oneself and others, or the ability to simulate pretend mental states and then apply the consequences of these simulations to others). Again, not all autistics fit this pattern, and the theory remains controversial.
In contrast, psychopaths are seemingly able to demonstrate the appearance of sensing the emotions of others with such a theory of mind, often demonstrating care and friendship in a convincing manner, and can use this ability to charm or manipulate, but they crucially lack the sympathy or compassion that empathy often leads to.

there is nothing wrong with you.
You do not need to have empathy for people so far away from you because you did not see them, you did not experience their pain.
But do you have empathy for people near you? for your parents, for your siblings and for your dog, your neighbor etc.,
if yes ok, if no, you need to see the doctor.
On the other hand, while your having empathy for those near you and not having empthy for those you are far away is alright but coming to Yahoo and advertising your not having empathy for 9/11 & Katrina Victims is disturbing. The victims did not do anything wrong. If you have anything against USA and the american policies, attack that and focus on propaganda precisely targeted at the culprit. You will be doing human kind a favor. To advertise your indifference to victims is distrubing and show how disoriented the human race is even after centuries of civilisation. I can understand if people without education make those remarks but if you are on the net and have access educated in history and social sciences you should be doing better.
There is a lot wrong going on with us but solve the problems we need to focus in the right direction, then only we can hope to survive and live together happily.
EnJoy till it lasts.

Very interesting question if you are serious. From my own experience I have been through a considerable amout of pain which has taught me much compassion. I also have used humor to deal with things and have made jokes that many above would be appaled at, apparently.
The fact that you are concerned is a posative not negative thing and tsk tsk to the judgemental people who do not show you the empathy they profess to have when you came here looking for help.
When I was younger there were moives called fases or faces of death or something like that. They were films of actual people being killed in accidents etc. I swore I would never watch one, but ended up in a group of people who were watching one of the movies, and just like the majority of people who rubber neck at an accident, my morbid curiosity got the best of me. What I noted that was interesting about the group is that they laughed and made jokes through the whole thing. Not because they were awful people but because it is a natural raction when uncomfortable to make jokes. Most comedians have had very difficult lives.
And I am from the area where 911 happened but was in South Carolina at the time. I was in contact with many from home and it was devastating, but the people I knew in SC did not seem to give it much thought at all and went about their business. Very few flags on cars, no one really talking about it at work. I was the only one glued to the news. And I doubt it even occured to them to wonder if there was something wrong with them.

Yeah I would think there is something wrong with you. What if that was you in their situation. Or if you lost someone you love to 9/11 or the flood. Maybe you should seek some kind of help there

If you thought of these two catastrophies as "funny" I believe you probably have some kind of mental disorder. I'm really not trying to be nasty or rude--I'm serious. You have difficulty with empathy and understanding of severe tragedy so you have problems with some of the social aspects of life. I suggest you seek therapy or, if you happen to be very young, grow up.

You need a reality check. Or maybe you need to have a tragedy happen to you for you to realize how much suffering it causes and it's really not all that funny.

Yes, it's wrong. Do you not know Jesus? He is love, the definition of love. If you are amused from others hurts then that is nothing but pure evil. You need to search your soul and find somewhere in your heart LOVE. Which is nothing but Jesus. You have know love in you. Which means you need to find God.

Exhibits lack of experience, and just because you don't get pangs of sympathy doesn't mean you can't try to understand others feelings
