Is it due to color, or due to its appearance or due to its nasty smell?

Actually, cockroaches DO NOT carry disease. That is strictly the province of flys and mosquitoes. They can worsen the affects of asthma, but that is NOT a disease, it's an allergy.

Most humans are repulsed at the sight of any "crawling insects". Cockroaches also tend to defecate wherever they happen to be. Nobody likes the thought of cockroach dung in their food but really there is no difference between that and the dung of any species.

Also it is a fallacy that they only infest dirty places. They go anywhere that there is food and that can be in evidence in the cleanest of kitchens as well as the not so clean ones.

I have never seen a cockroach except in the zoo (seriously) and I am still afraid of them. I actually hate all beetles. I think it's the shiny shell/wings that freaks me out. The shape of the body...the awful sound june bugs make when you step on them...everything. One time, I was at a hardware store, the ones that are in a huge warehouse with 20 ft ceilings...and I had my hair pulled up in a ponytail. A huge japanese beetle flew to the back of my neck. I felt it and at first didn't know what it was...then I put my hand back there and SCREAMED. I'm sure everyone there heard me. I actually hate dead ones almost as much as live ones. Go figure.

Its human behaviour Diana Teddy,
The thing doesn't limit itself to the cockroaches. It extends to all the things that have deviated from the common kind. People used to hate even the great personalities when they lived because they were different. That may explain the thing that most of the 'filmy aliens' are more or less insectlike- or like cockroaches standing on their hind legs.

Because due it's appearence, because it is ugly and awkward to see. So most of the people are afraid of cockroaches.

Definately the appearance. I don't think there's anything cute about an big insect. Most people hate them before they smell them.

They're known to carry a multitide of diseases, and are generally associated with people who live in squalor (depending on the region you live in).
