We are scared of the lion and the gazelle is weaker. Like cheering for the underdogs in a sporting game when the other side plays with guns I suppose. We feel sorry and pity for the prey of a larger animal in the food chain.

Because our society has this horrible stigma on death and the life-cycle of nature. In our eyes, death is ALWAYS bad, even though in this situation, one death could possibly be keeping an entire family of lions from dying of starvation.
The prey is seen as defenseless, even though they are clearly designed to evade predators (while predators are designed to hunt), with their eye placement, speed and coloring. And while this one did not "get away" this time, the few that did - the stronger, faster gazelles - live on to pass down their stronger and faster genes.
Perhaps we also relate a little bit too deeply to the gazelle's situation. We know how bad it stings when a co-worker steals an idea that we so brilliantly had, and he leaps ahead of us by bounds, unfairly. Just like the gazelle, struck down in our prime.

Good question. I think its because the gazelle represents our deepest layer. Gentle, innocent, beautiful, strong and yet very vulnerable. Most of us are not evenly matched for our predators i.e those who--like the lion--have no compassion in their hearts, and who could destroy our spirit. And like the gazelle, we too lack fangs and claws (and....venom) to get back at our lions.
Cruel and unfair. Yet, that is the way of the world. It has always been so.

You kind of can't help it. I mean, the lions don't care one bit about the suffering of the animals they kill--they start tearing into and eating it as soon as it's immobilized. In many cases it's death by crude vivisection, millions of times a year. We humans are unique in the animal kingdom as being the only species that would prefer the animals we kill not suffer when it happens.

Man is the only animal who doesn't look at his dinner in the eye before he bites it's head off.
Son, "Where do hamburgers come from, Daddy?"
Would we all be vegetarians if we had to butcher and eat an animal just once? Do carrots scream before we pull them up by their hair?
Just tell me where I can get some fresh Prana?
