Do you mean for the nursery? If so, go with something that can easily be re-decorated.
Plain off white walls are good. If you end up living at your current home for several years, when your son is 5 or 6 years old, he's going to be tired of the baby blue walls and John Lennon Real Love theme, you know? :)
Off white (or even white) walls are very easy to repaint...there's no priming or a billion coats of paint to cover the red, dark blue, yellow, etc. that you might have painted the nursery. Removable wall paper borders are nice, too.
When you find what theme you want, it might seem that the room is plain with plain walls, but you can get all kinds of accent stuff. Suppose you decide on Winnie the Pooh. You can get a lamp, crib set (bumper, sheets, etc.), wall hangings, pictures, etc.

nautical themes are easy to work with and you can take a coloring book page and trace the pictures onto the walls and then paint them. Pretty inexpensive decorating! As well, there's always nautical fabrics for curtains or you can do red or blue blinds. I used this theme for my sons room and as he grew, the theme grew - we repainted the walls and drew floor to ceiling lighthouses and painted them, and now in his teen years he really likes red and he flea markets - so he's always dragging home something and we're fixing it up - he brought home a piece of a real canoe to make book shelf out of - several old a lanterns and we painted them red - his walls are just blue now - so, it was a theme that really worked out cheap all along for us - he found some old oars on the river and brought them home and had Dad build him a top for them and made his own computer desk using them for the legs. Because he wouldn't keep stuff out from under his bed, we made a solid framed bed and of course we didn't want to put a bed skirt on it, so we painted ocean waves on it and then when he visited his real Dad in Florida and went to the beach he brought back sea shells and we made wall displays. He never seemed to mind and "The Little Tug Boat" still sits on his book shelf along with a plaque of Nautical Knots, things that caught his attention - we took him to a submarine once and he's got a model of it put together. He's really into gaming, so his room decor doesn't really affect him, but he's always told me when he thought it was time to grow up a little more - and his friends have always told him he has the coolest bedroom. We've not ever put a whole lot of money in it - just a lot of elbow grease and some weekend fun time together.

The blue jean bear is a very affordable and stylish boy set. I found it at super k-mart or walmart. My10 mth old son love the fuzzy soft out lined bear on his cotton blanket. My 3yr old daughter and 1yr old son also love his blue jean bear theme. They enjoyed this better than Winnie the pooh or any other famous theme. This was original and very few people were using it. I love it. All the accessories are just adorable. I plan to save it for my future grand children.

I didn't have themes for either of my children but I would think that a more inexpensive theme would be one that you create on your own. If you get into the commercialized themes, then you're paying for the character ie. Winnie the Pooh. If you simply had a bear theme, you could pick up bear things anywhere. Hope this helps.

My husband is in the navy so we went with a Sailor baby crib set with matching lamp and mobile. From there I just searched around for assorted stuff with bears and ships and stuff. Ebay is a great way to find anything. You don't have to spend too much money. You just find a crib set that will be easy to find coordinating stuff with. My advice is to not get something too expensive because they out grow there cribs and mobiles so fast. Good luck with your little boy!

go online to jcpenny's they have great themed nurserys for great prices. i like frogs n bugs for little boys. everyone does baseball or sports themes. you could also do denim stuff, you could buy that cheap at target or marshalls then add something u really like to the denim, maybe just a blue stripped fabric for the bedding & windows for a accent.
good luck.
btw, congrats.

My friend has a boy and she did noahs ark.. Not sure on the price..
Another friend did street signs. Again, not sure on the decor or prices..
Another good one would be like construction trucks and such..
