Demerol is effective, but sometimes they are a bit stingy with it. Just start hollering for more before you need it real bad because they always make you wait.
An epidural does not damage your back if done properly.

Your back will hurt forever? Who told you that nonsense?
Anaethesiologists have the best job in one way: they come in the room and give the soon-to-be-mom an epidural, and the woman says "I love you." Guaranteed.
The epidural is the way to go. No effect on the baby, no lasting effect on you. You'll probably get some swelling in your legs, especially your ankles, but that'll go away in a few days.

If you are afraid of the epudirual then you can try dermol. But when I had my son, I recieved the dermol and it did nothing for me so I went ahead and recieved the epudirual. And trust me you will love it. It allows you to be comfortable and not be in pain. And they will give you pitocin to speed up your labor since you did recieve the epudirual. But having something go wrong after you recieve the epudirual is not very common. Todays epudiruals are very safe and have improved so very much. And there are not many people that their backs hurt after recieving the epudirual. I know that mine did not hurt. But everyone is different. I hope that this helps.

I don't know about you but when I had mine twenty years ago the feeling is very dreadful! I had been given something but I doubt anything would have helped even if it was something like morphine! All I can tell you is what I did. I rocked back and forth in my bed and used my mental ability to block out pain the best I could. Rocking was wonderful for me, it helped divert the contractions beautifully! Good Luck.
