I'm thinking about buying a new car, and it has a lot of miles on it. I was wondering if i should take it somewhere to have a compression test done, and if i do would this give me an idea on the "well being" of the engine. If not what should i do to ensure that engine isnt going to need rebuilt/replaced in a month.

A compression test is a good indicator of an engine's operating health. It makes sure that there is no leaks inside the combustion chamber. A better test would be a leak down test that shows where the leaks are, if any are found. The leaks can come from worn piston rings, valve seals in the top end, or cracked internals.

But there are many, many other areas that can be problematic leading to major repairs or a complete engine swap. Also every make and model has a history of consistant problems that can be found through various web sites and Consumer Reports.
