Okay, I really think it has a lot to do with how quickly kids grow up now. I am 28, and when I was in junior high, I was not even considering having sex. I wasn't a goody goody or anything like that, but I just viewed sex as a more grown-up activity, and it wasn't something I was interested in trying. I was content with kissing. Now, fourth and fifth graders are having sex. I think this is part of the reason why so many students are okay with flirting with teachers and even going much, much further than just flirting.
But as a teacher myself, I really cannot fathom having sexual feelings towards a student, no matter if the student seemed older or flirted with me or whatever ... I think these women have issues with power. Maybe they like the idea of being in control in all areas of the relationship. And they definitely have security issues.

Probably, there are many explanations for this.
Under reporting in the past. Until recently, a boy having sex with an older woman would not be of huge concern to most parents, at least not to fathers anyway. Another reason that reporting might have increased, is that people - parents and children - are more aware, so maybe it was in the past that you should have asked "where are these kids parents?".
More women working out MIGHT mean less supervision.
Mostly, I think media has a lot to do with it, affecting it in two different ways. First, the teachers today (most between 22 and 40 something) grew up in an environment bombarded with sexual images, frequently of a pedophile nature. We see it in adds, video clips etc. The pop stars are frequently teens or in very early 20s. The second way is that theses same images that were/are seen by the teachers, are affecting the children, that in turn become, or at least act, much more sexual than children should or used to. A 14 year old girl today frequently does not look like a child but, as they try to copy there idols and role models, end up appearing like a promiscuous woman in heat

As a teacher, I'm as horrified as everyone else, and angry because these individuals are making an already difficult job more so. It would be very simple to lay the blame at the feet of a permissive society that encourages sex outside of marriage and pornography, but I think the answer is much more complex than can be provided in this format. Suffice it to say, that until it becomes fashionable to keep your pants zipped (for both sexes) you'll continue to see instances of this kind of abuse reported in the news.
As for parents - I'm not sure all of them realize what their children are doing, what they're wearing, or who they're running with. Perhaps if you walked down the hall of a local high school you'd understand. Between guys sagging and girls running around in revealing attire, I'm not sure that you shouldn't expect the kind of behavior you're describing. You might also ask your child (if you have one) have many of their friends are sexually active. If kids are sexually active at twelve and thirteen, why wouldn't you expect deviant type behavior. However, there is absolutely no excuse for the teacher - NONE!

I don't know whats going on lately but I have noticed more and more teachers are being arrested for inappropriate conduct related to sexual abuse. Its happening every were from middle school to high school and women's are not the exception to the rule. Police is working extra hard to catch these pervs, and I am glad most kids speak up and report them. As a parent I would be terrified, for people here work most of the time, and really cant be on their kids world the 24/7.

um...what about all the teachers who don't have sex with their students? you will never see a leading news story about a teacher who his/her 2nd graders to learn fractions and then jump to the conclusion that all teachers must be this good. but if a few teachers make the headlines for abhorrent behavior everyone wants to condemn the profession.
it's not sick teachers that are doing this. it's sick people. being a teacher has nothing to do with statutory rape. it happens every day with people who are gas station attendants, video store clerks, businessmen, lawyers, doctors, etc. but when one of them gets caught no one says 'what's with these doctors?'
condemn the person, not the profession.
